New Year's Style

Don't forget to rock your favorite jewelry this New Year's Eve! Wear what YOU love, and makes you feel good about yourself--that's true style!

Some of my personal favorites for this New Year's Eve include: chunky rings, HUGE statement rings with a modern-retro feel, and dangling, chain earrings.

Most likely I'll be staying in this New Year's Eve night with my favorite guys: my hubby & our son! Still, I'll so be rocking the jewelry; big party or small house party.....I have to wear my jewelry!:)

Official Good Bye To Fall

On the eve of December 1st, I wanted to take a moment and say an official Good-Bye (for now) to Fall. It was a spectacular Fall this year, with long weeks filled with brilliant colors, beautiful weather, and amazing scenery.

But, no matter how great it would be if Fall could stay year round, one season must give way to the next.

Inevitably change comes...colors fade, leaves fall, and the weather changes.

Ushering in what's to come.

Thank You Fall! See you again, next year.

Thanks All Around!

Well, last week's last Downtown Downers Grove Market went really well. It was so nice to see so many repeat customers, and to meet some new folks, as well. Although this market has ended, you will be seeing and hearing from me throughout the year, so keep checking my blog, face book, and twitter for updates.

I want to say a big Thank You to the Indian Boundary YMCA for all of their hard work co-coordinating this past season's Downtown Downer's Grove Market! They are a dedicated and helpful group of folks who make the market happen, and it is great to know that the proceeds from vendor's booth sales go to directly helping the YMCA enhance programs and offer program assistance for children and families in need.

Also, a special Thank You to the owners of Ballydole Pub & Restaurant in Downers Grove for hosting the market vendors at a special celebration luncheon!

Lastly, on behalf of myself and my family, Cheers to all of the lovely people that we had the chance to meet this year during our time at the market. I thank you for choosing my local, handmade jewelry! Hope to see you again next year!

September is Hunger Action Month and The Matthew Rheintgen Fund

Through a fundraising effort, I just received a letter in the mail from the Northern Illinois Food Bank, and have learned that September is Hunger Action Month-a national call to action to raise awareness of domestic hunger. If you would like to learn more about this issue, visit their website at www.northernilfoodbank.org/

Also, as I was reading our local newspaper I was very moved by a local father's efforts to raise money for his son's memorial The Matthew Rheintgen Fund. If you would like to learn more about this nonprofit, visit their website and facebook page.

Happy Friday to all.

Back into the Studio I Go

I'm finally getting back into my studio today to make some jewelry. Taking a moment to settle in, sipping a decaf, and enjoying the new view from my newly rearranged space; I can just see the soothing green leaves dipping down from their long branches, bent towards the ground. This new backdrop gives just enough light, and more privacy than I had before. Lovely Fall.

Fall Arrives

Fall has suddenly arrived. It is a breezy, cool 68 degrees, and the sun is shining. Suddenly, jeans have replaced shorts, and sweatshirts have replaced short sleeves. When I step outside the door and look up towards the trees, I can see the start of Autumn; bundles of green leaves, slowly turning into rich shades of orange and yellow, then gently dropping to the grass below. Nature knows what She's doing, and She does it at the right pace. No forcing, no "to-do-list." Just her natural rhythm, the constant ebb and flow of change. I love the four seasons, and the lessons nature provides as she quietly changes and grows before our eyes. Wishing everyone a happy weekend.

Beautiful Day at The Market

Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day, and we had a great turnout. Thanks to my community friends who stopped up to say "Hi." I really appreciate your support, and it's just a lot of fun to have friends stop by and chat. Also, after several weeks off from this market, it was great to be back, and to have the chance to talk with the other vendors. It's a really cool group of folks at this market.

And, it was great to meet so many new people! I love hearing your stories, your reactions to the jewelry, and helping you find that perfect piece for yourself and your loved ones. I just can't explain the feeling I get when you choose to buy my jewelry, whether as an everyday piece, or a thoughtful gift for birthdays and holidays. It's just an honor to know that my jewelry will be going out into the world with you, your friends, and your family. It's really cool.

Yesterday was an especially exciting day as I previewed some new, Fall designs. It was invaluable to get folk's feedback on these, and to hear, and see, their reactions to the designs, stones, and colors. All of this feedback is inspiration for me, and I can't wait to get back to making more Fall inspired designs. Happy Sunday!

Some Fridays Are Just Like That

So, before I even finished my first cup of coffee this morning. Hmmm, wait a minute. Having just written this sentence, I realize this statement could be the very reason why this happened in the first place...

The bad news is that the entire blender full of carrot-orange juice with blueberry and banana smoothie I was making earlier for my breakfast exploded ALL OVER THE KITCHEN. I mean, every square inch of our tiny kitchen, and most things in it are covered with it--the walls, the floor, the counter top, the toaster, the blender, and the coffee pot. Two paper towel rolls later, and, at last, it finally doesn't smell like I harvested a bounty of organic carrots from our kitchen floor!

The good news is that seeing all of these rich colors blended together--bright orange with bits of dark blue--gives me some great ideas for Fall jewelry designs!

There's that silver lining...okay, I need some coffee, now.

Happy Friday, and hope everyone has a great weekend!

Happy, Happy

Two days before her wedding, I delivered the above rings to the bride-to-be--a soon- to-be thank you gift for her bridemaids. Her reaction was wonderful; smiles, and even a few tears. She was so happy to see that each custom, handmade ring turned out just as she had hoped.

The next night, at the rehearsal dinner, the bride-to-be gave each bridesmaid their ring. Later that same evening, I received a text message from one of the bridesmaids telling me how thrilled everyone was with their rings; they were happy, and I was so happy to hear this news.

Happiness all around...great jewelry will do that to you!
-----

A big congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Bertulis. I have it on good authority that they had a very moving and memorable wedding ceremony, and an amazing wedding. Congratulations to them!

In The Now

Listening to Monsters of Folk, hand making custom rings, and enjoying the rejuvenation that remains from having spent this past weekend with my sister and family...highlights included staying up until 3 am just catching up with with my sister; laughing hysterically w/ my husband, sister, and brother-in-law, the entire weekend; watching our son playing with his cousins; spending time with our cool nieces and nephews, and spending time with family friends...it doesn't get better than that.

Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago: Tuesday, Free Admission!

So far this summer has a been nice mix of local activities, a bit of travel, and occasional trips into the city of Chicago. On one of my more recent trips into the city, I took our 7 year old son to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art for the first time. It was a great experience in many ways:

1) We went to the museum on a Tuesday, which is Free Admission day, all day long!!!

2) Alexandar Calder's work is on exhibit and our 7 year old son enjoyed seeing this exhibit--the colors, the scale, the mixed mediums, the story behind his work. I loved it, too.

3) We were able to have lunch with my hubbie in the city that same day.

4) Did I mention that it was Free Admission Day?! This was key to our day because, while our son did enjoy the museum, he was also ready to leave in a relatively short period of time, so free admission made it a very worthwhile trip.

All around, there is some really interesting, thought provoking, and beautiful art going on at the MOCA, Chicago. I highly recommend putting Free Tuesday at the Museum of Contemporary Art on your summer fun "to-do list!"

This Week's "To-Do" List

It's been a week since we arrived back home from our family vacation with my hubbie's side of the family. We had a wonderful time, and each of us felt refreshed from catching up with family we haven't seen for a while, and spending plenty of time outside by the water.

Now, getting back into the swing of things...this week my to-do list is nice and full. First up this morning, an unexpected trip to the dentist. Let's just leave it at that!

The rest of my list looks something like this: organizing my office/studio, designing and hand making jewelry for upcoming markets, and working on hand making 10 custom designs for my client Bethany's up-coming August wedding.

Happy Monday to all!

Great Day at the Market

Yesterday's market was a big success! It turned out to be a gorgeous day (finally!) with lots of folks out shopping and enjoying the beautiful weather. I really enjoyed meeting so many new people (including folks from Texas, Champaign and St. Charles, IL. and Arizona!), new vendors, seeing community friends, and getting your feedback on my designs. It is great to hear that so many of you appreciate the 100% Recycled Sterling Silver Wire that I'm using to make the majority of my rings and earrings with, as well as the Fair Trade supply Pearls that are featured in several, current earring and bracelet designs.

It was also great fun to hear so many cool ideas for custom pieces--keep these coming, and together we can make your creative ideas a reality! As I talked with many of you yesterday, if I don't have a particular size or stone in stock, I will do my absolute best to get more in, or to find an alternative for your designs.

On that note, I just wanted to add that, for the time being, I am officially sold out of all of my Opal Rings!!! It is so cool that so many of you have responded to them; they really are a gorgeous and unique stone! I will let you know as soon as I have more Opals in stock, and hope to bring more Opal Rings to my next trip to the market, which will be Saturday, July 24th.

Thanks again for your support and well wishes, and I will be posting pictures of yesterday's market in the next few days, so check back soon!

In addition to all of the wonderful vendors that will be at tomorrow's market, there will also be live YMCA fitness classes (participation welcome) and a Youth Artist Program. Hope to see you there!

First Farmer's Market Update

Yesterday's debut Farmer's Market went really well, despite the pouring rain and gusting wind that hit around 10:30 am!!! It was great to see so many friends, to meet so many cool people, and to get your feedback on my designs. Overall, it was really inspiring to be surrounded by other Indie craftspeople, artists and small businesses, and to get to talk with people who go out of their way to shop and support this group of folks.

And, a big Thank You to all of you who emailed and sent well wishes and congratulations on this new venture; I really appreciate your support!

Up-Cycle!

The other day, I arrived home from work to find a lovely surprise...a family friend had stopped by and dropped off two necklaces that she no longer wears. The beads/stones are really pretty, so she thought that I might be able to use them to make something new.

Giving new life to beads, stones, and other supplies is really inspiring...I can't wait to see what new designs emerge. So, here's to up-cycling, and to thoughtful friends!

Custom Ring Order Finished!

Recently I finished making a beautiful Blue Opal Stone wrapped in 100% Recycled Argentium Sterling Silver Wire for my client, Bethany. She is a creative DIY Bride-To-Be who is getting married this summer, and is also finishing up her Master's Degree in Education! The custom ring, pictured below, was made for Bethany's friend and colleague as a special "Thank You" gift.

Bethany has also hired me to make 10 other custom jewelry pieces for each of her bride maids as a very meaningful and personal "Thank You" gift. Each custom piece will be designed and made with the individual's personality and style in mind, starting from a thoughtful description that the Bride-To-Be has written about each woman in her wedding party. I'm looking forward to making these custom pieces!

To Market I Go

I found out that I've been accepted as a vendor at this summer's Downtown Downers Grove Market. This is a fun, outdoor market with a variety of vendors including fresh flowers, produce from local farmer's, crafts, food, music, and, of course, jewelry! This will be my first time selling at the market, however, as a shopper, I've really enjoyed shopping at this market. And, in general, I'm a huge fan of Farmer's Markets--love em', love em', love em'! Dates forthcoming...

Custom Orders

Would you like a custom made ring or pair of earrings from KOGJ? A custom piece is the perfect gift for yourself, or for someone you care about. Whether you are attending a special occasion, looking for a meaningful gift for your friends or family, or just looking for that perfect piece of jewelry for your everyday, let's work together to make your idea a reality.

I also specialize in custom designing and hand making wire wrapped rings for your Bridesmaid's gifts...thank your friends for being a part of your special day by giving them jewelry that they will love to wear! I ask the Bride-to-Be to write up a small description of her wedding party attendants, telling me a bit about each person's personality, style, and a color that comes to mind when she thinks of each friend. Based on these descriptions, I hand pick semi-precious stones, quartz or glass, along with wire, and design and custom make each ring. The final gift comes ready to give in a Recycled jewelry box wrapped with Raffia String, and also includes a small write up describing the stone's properties and materials used. It is truly a unique and thoughtful gift!

For all Custom Designs, write me at kateogradyjewelry (at) gmail (dot) com and describe the project you have in mind, letting me know about any deadlines, the number of pieces needed, a color scheme, and your budget. Based off of this information, I will contact you via email with a design idea and quote.

I look forward to our collaboration!
